Meet your Board Member……Scott Rhyne, Parental Involvement Chair
Scott Rhyne is our state parental involvement chair which is perfect as he is an extremely involved father. In his 5 years of being involved with PTA he has served as local unit president, 2nd vice president in charge of programs, recording/corresponding secretary, parliamentarian, and assistant district director (Southeastern District). Most recently he volunteered to be Cookie Dad for his youngest daughter’s Girl Scout Troop. Scott is a PTA member at Deep Creek Central Elementary, Hugo Owens Middle, John Yeates Middle and Glen Cove Elementary. If you come up to him and ask him to join your PTA be prepared for a resounding “I’d love to!”
Elected to the Virginia PTA Board of Managers in 2009, Scott has hit the ground running. His program, Dad’s Night Out, was selected by the Great Ideas Program and he uses this tool to help his and other schools plan events geared towards fathers or father figures. Being a member of PTA has opened many doors for him. He was chosen to represent Virginia PTA at the first annual Emerging Minority Leaders and Fatherhood Conference in Atlanta, GA. He and his daughters travelled to Charlotte, NC to attend and support All Pro Dad’s Father & Kids Experience as well as to Lynchburg, VA to present parental involvement workshops for Successful Innovations’ first annual Parent Involvement Conference. He has been fortunate to meet a variety of people from Rev. Jesse Jackson, Carey Casey (CEO National Center for Fathering), Chuck Saylors (National PTAs first ever male president), and Gloria Dalton (Parent Ombudsman for Virginia Department of Education).
Scott, married to Teresa for over 16 years, lives in Chesapeake. His two daughters are students with Chesapeake Public Schools. Amanda is in 3rd grade at Deep Creek Central Elementary and Rebekah is in 8th grade at Hugo Owens Middle. Both girls are active in field hockey and you will most likely find him at the field hockey training center on any given Saturday in the spring and summer. In addition to his PTA and other volunteer positions, he works full time as an analyst at HSBC where he’s been for 21 years. The motto “Every Child, One Voice” is not lost on Scott. In everything he does he puts his children first and looks for ways to advocate and support the children in our state. He lives by a saying he tells both his girls daily, “I love you. Have a great day. Make good choices and be a good citizen.” His daughter gently reminds him of one last saying, “Be a leader, not a follower.”
