A Message from our National PTA President - Charles "Chuck" J. Saylors

PTA: More Than Ready for the Future!

As we enter a brand new decade this year, I can’t help but think about how we have the awesome responsibility of setting the tone for PTA® the next 10 years – and what good shape we’re in to do it. With more than 5 million motivated members, savvy leaders such as yourself, and an abundance of free resources for parents and teachers, we have the ability to make 2010 and beyond some of the best years the PTA has ever experienced.

For this reason, I encourage you to approach the events and celebrations this year with revitalized gusto. With Take Your Family to School Week approaching (February 7-13), we have a great opportunity to ramp up involvement, recruit new members and re-engage families in our communities.  As always, our Take Your Family to School Week pays tribute to PTA’s Founding Mothers, providing veteran members, new members and non-members with a passionate reminder of the principles that launched our association. What perfect timing for an inspiring look to the past to help guide us through our future!

Of course, this isn’t the only thing we’re honoring this year. This year we’re also celebrating the 40th anniversary of the merger between the National Congress of Parents and Teachers and the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers—today’s National PTA. We’re also excited  about the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the PTA Reflections program, dedicated to allowing children to express themselves through the arts. Thanks to these efforts, diversity in both membership and academic endeavors, have enriched the lives of countless children across the country – something we must continue to develop as an association. In March, which we claim “National PTA Legislative Month,” we’ll take stock of these and other advocacy efforts to ensure our association is doing absolutely everything possible to take action on behalf of our children’s education, health, and well-being.

So, as we move forward this year, let’s use our impressive legacy to re-inspire ourselves and push through the next decade with passion, integrity, ambition and clarity. I could not be prouder of your efforts up to this point, and I thank you for all that you’ve done and will continue to do as a leader in PTA. Here’s to another successful decade!

PTA: ¡Más que listos para el futuro!

Al comenzar una nueva década este año, no puedo evitar pensar en la gran responsabilidad que será  marcar las nuevas pautas de la PTA® para los próximos 10 años, y en las condiciones favorables en las que nos encontramos para lograrlo. Con más de 5 millones de miembros motivados, líderes sabios como usted y una gran cantidad de recursos gratuitos para padres y maestros, tenemos la capacidad de hacer de 2010 y de los años subsiguientes la mejor época que la PTA jamás haya experimentado.

Por este motivo, le recomiendo que este año se acerque a los eventos y celebraciones con mucho entusiasmo. Con la llegada de la Semana para llevar a la familia a la escuela (Take Your Family to School Week), del 7 al 13 de febrero, tenemos una gran oportunidad de aumentar la participación, reclutar nuevos miembros y volver a comprometer a las familias de nuestras comunidades. Como siempre, nuestra Semana para llevar a la familia a la escuela rinde homenaje a las madres fundadoras de la PTA al brindar a los miembros veteranos, a los nuevos miembros y a los que no lo son un recordatorio apasionado de los principios que promovieron nuestra asociación. ¡Qué momento tan oportuno para mirar en forma alentadora hacia el pasado para que nos guíe en el futuro!

Por supuesto, no es lo único que homenajearemos este año. Este año también celebraremos el 40.º aniversario de la fusión entre el Congreso Nacional de Padres y Maestros (National Congress of Parents and Teachers) y el Congreso Nacional de Padres y Maestros Negros (National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers), que constituyen la PTA Nacional actual. También estamos entusiasmados con la celebración del 40.º aniversario del Programa Reflexiones de la PTA, dedicado a permitir que los niños se expresen a través del arte. Gracias a estos logros, la diversidad tanto en la membresía como en las iniciativas académicas ha enriquecido la vida de innumerables niños en todo el país, y esto es algo que debemos continuar desarrollando como asociación. En marzo, el “Mes legislativo de la PTA Nacional”, evaluaremos éste y otros esfuerzos de promoción para asegurarnos de que la asociación hace todo lo posible en nombre de la educación, la salud y el bienestar de nuestros niños.

Por lo tanto, a medida que avanzamos en este año, utilicemos nuestro impresionante legado para volver a inspirarnos y abrirnos camino en la próxima década con pasión, integridad, ambición y claridad. No podría estar más orgulloso de sus esfuerzos hasta ahora, y les agradezco todo lo que han hecho y lo que continuarán haciendo como líderes de la PTA. ¡Por otra década exitosa!
