Use of PTA Materials


Permission to Reprint National PTA Materials:

Unless otherwise noted, National PTA materials may be duplicated and distributed by PTA member organizations without written permission from the National PTA. When a PTA excerpts from or reprints PTA materials, a credit line should be added.

Note: While most articles in In OurChildren magazine may be reproduced for use by PTAs, some authors put limitations on how their articles may be used. In those instances, a special note will run at the beginning or end of the article, stating the author’s wishes or instructions on how to contact the author for reprint permission.

Non-PTA members: National PTA materials may not be duplicated by any other organization or person not directly affiliated with or working for the benefit of a PTA member organization without the express written permission of the National PTA.

Reproducing Non-PTA materials:

It is not advisable to reproduce comic strips, newspaper or magazine articles, excerpts from books, items from other organization’s newsletters, or other printed material without permission from the owner of the copyright.

To request permission to reprint, contact the owner of the copyright directly. Be prepared to answer how the material will be used, when it will be used, who the audience is, the quantity to be distributed, and whether the reprint will appear in a publication for sale. Ask how they prefer their credit line to appear.

Some copyrighted works may be used without permission under the Fair Use Doctrine for:
  • private and incidental use
  • reasonable quotation
  • general use for noncommercial gain
  • news reporting
  • research and educational purposes

What is Fair Use?

  • "Fair use" cannot diminish the value of, or compete with, the original work
  • The more you take, the less likely it is "fair use"
  • Use the 200 rule: Under 200 works, reference source, over 200 get reprint permission

Hosting a Movie

Read the legal guidelines. When planning any movie night, it’s important for PTAs to do so legally.
